Balance and Fall Prevention Program:
In the US, 1 of every 3 adults, 65 years or older, will fall each year. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, falls are the leading cause of injury related deaths among people 65 years and older.
Many older adults experience concerns about falling that can restrict their activity. This Program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. The program includes:
Self-Assessment of General Health
- Blood Pressure and Heart Rate
The physical therapist and their patient will review the results of the evaluation. The patient will be advised if they’re at risk of falling, and if so, why. If the cause is physical, such as poor strength and balance, an exercise program will be designed specifically for the patient. Environmental factors will be identified and eliminated at home and in their community as well.
Exercises targeted to improve strength, balance, walking speed, stride, and cardiovascular fitness.
The patient will be instructed of simple exercises that can be done at home.
- A report will be provided to the patient and their referring physician summarizing the effect of the program. Their physician may recommend continued therapy to address specific problems.
